چکیده

Based on serological data from prevalence studies of rubella, mumps and hepatitis A, this paper describes a flexible local maximum likelihood method for the estimation of the rate at which susceptible individuals acquire infection at different ages. In contrast to parametric models used before in the literature, the local polynomial likelihood method allows one to model this age-dependent force of infection without making any assumptions about the parametric structure. Moreover, this method allows for simultaneous nonparametric estimation of age-specific incidence and prevalence. Unconstrained models may lead to negative estimates for the force of infection at certain ages. To overcome this problem and to guarantee maximal flexibility, the local smoother can be constrained to be monotone. It turns out that different parametric and nonparametric estimates of the force of infection can exhibit considerable different qualitative features like location and number of maxima, emphasizing the importance of a well-chosen flexible statistical model.

Buckling of multi wall carbon nanotube cantilevers in the vicinity of graphite sheets using monotone positive method

In this paper, a monotone positive solution is studied for buckling of a distributed model of multi walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) cantilevers in the vicinity of thin and thick graphite sheets subject to intermolecular forces. In the modeling of intermolecular forces, Van der Waals forces are taken into account. A hybrid nano-scale continuum model based on Lennard–Jones potential is applied to ...

On 3-monotone approximation by piecewise polynomials

Abstract. We consider 3-monotone approximation by piecewise polynomials with prescribed knots. A general theorem is proved, which reduces the problem of 3-monotone uniform approximation of a 3-monotone function, to convex local L1 approximation of the derivative of the function. As the corollary we obtain Jackson-type estimates on the degree of 3-monotone approximation by piecewise polynomials ...

Inequalities for Walsh Polynomials with Semi-monotone and Semi-convex Coefficients

Using the concept of majorant sequences (see [4, ch. XXI], [5], [7], [8]) some new inequalities for Walsh polynomials with complex semi-monotone, complex semi-convex, complex monotone and complex convex coefficients are given.

On the Optimization of Monotone Polynomials by the (1+1) EA and Randomized Local Search

Randomized search heuristics like evolutionary algorithms and simulated annealing find many applications, especially in situations where no full information on the problem instance is available. In order to understand how these heuristics work, it is necessary to analyze their behavior on classes of functions. Such an analysis is performed here for the class of monotone pseudo-boolean polynomia...

MARKOV-NIKOLSKII TYPE INEQUALITY FOR ABSOLUTELY MONOTONE POLYNOMIALS OF ORDER k

A function Q is called absolutely monotone of order k on an interval I if Q(x) ≥ 0, Q(x) ≥ 0, . . . , Q(k)(x) ≥ 0, for all x ∈ I. An essentially sharp (up to a multiplicative absolute constant) Markov inequality for absolutely monotone polynomials of order k in Lp[−1, 1], p > 0, is established. One may guess that the right Markov factor is cn2/k and, indeed, this turns out to be the case. Moreo...
